Cholo #1

Not to be confused with Gary Arlington's Cholo of the same era, this obscure mag was published by Biney Ruiz aka Five Star Productions in San Jose circa 1979. While it does appear on the surface to be a legitimate publication covering lowriders and Chicano culture, it also has an odd element of moral subversion. Your first clue should be the dedication to "Jessus Christ," but more obviously, the mag's obsession with telling "cholos" what NOT to do. Such as drugs. Writing on walls. "Mad-dog"-ing. Fighting. Basically, what cholos have always been known for. This is like Christian heavy metal where they want you to worship Jesus instead of Satan. Nice try, "Cholo" - you blew it. Still a great time capsule and an intriguing read that adds even more dimension to this underdocumented subculture.
