Kill Your Parents
Kill Your Parents
I need to let you know that this cruddy looking thing is one of my favorite zines of all time. It exemplifies the capability of this modest format. With a little effort, an idea can be presented and land with every bit of gravitas as those with a hundred times the means. It's like punk's three chords - amazing what you can achieve when you strip out all of the pretense.
Don't let the messy lettering and crude clip art fool you - this is a fully-realized vision. It's satire in the grand tradition of "A Modest Proposal" or "SCUM Manifesto." The premise here is that parents should be abolished, and if you think that's insane, well, so is eating kids and killing all men, see comparisons. On display is adolescent ennui that's a result of modernity, where evolution of society has far outpaced our biology. Young people are desperately wanting to break free and express their hormonally-driven independence in a world that's not ready for them.
Art like this works when it gets you to see a completely contrary viewpoint, and find truths in places you might never have looked. Whether you fully agree or not is irrelevent - it's the expansion of perspective you should be grateful for.
"Daddy Wore A Suit" would make a great poster.
Created by the late Aragorn in Sacramento, early 90s. Half-sized 5.5" x 8.5", 12 pages, some creasing but overall very good.
