From a genre of early 80s free tabloid mags that existed primarly as ad vehicles, interspersed secondarily with content. Access to relatively cheap ads enabled creative businesses from boutiques to record labels to reach their demographic in a print world that skewed overwhelmingly banal. There were several regional branches of this publication, with the original starting in Los Angeles and another in Boston.
